The word on the street was on the spot on this upcoming 40GB Playstation 3. Sony Europe has just announced it: "We have a brand new 40 GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next-generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price." (David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe - SCEE).

With the PS3 launch looming, Japanese electronics giant shuts down production of the console that brought it to the industry in the first place.
Sony entered the global gaming industry with the Japanese release of the original PlayStation in December of 1994. More than 11 years and two more consoles later, the electronics giant has pulled the plug on its first console, ceasing all production of PS units. Last September, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone.
Despite the news, Sony representatives noted today that the end of production does not necessarily mean the end of availability. PS hardware and software are still selling in countries around the world.
Even if original PlayStation systems and games are becoming slim pickings in the US, gamers likely won't be going without for long. As part of its PlayStation Business Briefing 2006, Sony last week announced that it is working on an emulator that would allow gamers to play PS titles on the PSP. Details haven't been released yet, but Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said the games would be digitally distributed.
While the PlayStation's decade-plus production run is certainly impressive, it isn't the longest life span for a gaming console. Atari released its Video Computer System (more popularly known as the Atari 2600) in 1977 and didn't officially pull the plug on it until 1991.

Just upon the launch of the new Xbox console the inquirer posts distressing news. A patent implemented in Sony’s new generation console (PS3) will prevent pre-used games to be played again on a different machine. This will put a stop in the double profit many game suppliers have but would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer.
The technology would allow an authentication code to be read and then rendered unreadable; making the software unplayable on any machine but the one which first read it.

Much to the surprise Sony came out with a bang with jaw-dropping demonstration of the PlayStation 3’s capabilities completely overshadowing Microsoft’s subsequent Xbox 360 press event. Sony revealing the look of the console, specs, and launch date. Slated for release in Spring 2006, the PlayStation 3 features a PowerPC-base core running at 3.2 GHz, 256MB of XDR RAM at 3.2 GHz, 256MB GDDR3 VRAM at 700 MHz, Bluetooth wireless controllers, built in WiFi (802.11b/g), and RSX, a state-of-the-art next-gen GPU by Nvidia with a clock speed of 550 MHz. The console is backwards compatible, as is the Xbox 360. Make no mistake: the PlayStation 3 is utterly superior in graphics to the Xbox 360 from what has been shown. Killzone on the PlayStation 3 was an eye-opener -- undoubtedly the most beautiful looking FPS game to date. However the Xbox 360 seems far more versatile than the PS3 -- potentially drawing in a much more diverse audience. Microsoft’s big investment for the Xbox 360 is online with Xbox Live. Microsoft has shown to be more forward thinking with respect to online gaming.

If you are a PSP user then don't install any updates (for now)!
Sony has warned PSP users not to install a "PSP update" that recently surfaced on various websites and forums. According to the company, doing so will render your handheld useless, a condition which Sony can reverse, for a small fee.

Nvidia's contribution to Sony's next game console should be ready by the end of 2005, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang indicated yesterday. While the bulk of his recent "fireside chat" with investment firm Morgan Stanley covered the bigger picture of Nvidia's business, Huang filled in a few more details regarding the chipmaker's collaboration with Sony.
Though it's designed to work in concert with the Cell processor, developed by Sony and IBM, the GPU for the new console is derived from Nvidia's technology. "It's based on the next generation GPU technology," Huang said, "and our expectation is to try and put it into production this year." Later, he reiterated that point -- "I have every expectation that we will be able to see final production silicon later on in the year."

Nvidia has revealed they have been working with Sony on the Playstation 3 hardware. According to the report, Nvidia is in fact working on some sort of Geforce technology to be used in the new Playstation. This new co-processor will work alongside Sony's own "Cell" processor in the new machine.
Nvidia had previously worked with Microsoft to make the underlying graphics technology for the original X-Box. ATI had been picked by Microsoft, to develop the next-generation X-Box technology last August. This is a major deal for Nvidia and Sony. As for the graphics hardware itself, it is described as a "graphics and image processing foundation for a broad range of applications from computer entertainment to broadband applications."
